Optimus No. 8
This is a vintage, pre-WWII, alcohol burning camping stove which is alternately described as "utterly reliable" and "very heavy."
What it isn't is fast. Unlike a modern blowtorch pretending to be a backpacking stove the Optimus No 8 can bring a pot of water to a boil in 15 minutes on a good day.
Usually at least 20.
Speed is not the strong suit of the Optimus No 8.
No, this is a stove built for wandering, for poking along, perhaps with a purpose, but more often, not. It is for pausing and making civilized cups of tea.
It isn't the stove of a hiker, it's a rambler's stove.
Team Optimus No 8 will be meandering from Jay Pass to Hazen Notch with a deplorable lack of ambition or speed, but with tea, and biscuits.
If you'd care to join us, we'll upgrade to tea cakes.
All are welcome, but if we have a goal, it is to set a land speed record in leisurely.
